The zk-SNARK mining algorithm is the core proof mechanism used by the Aleo (ALEO) network to secure blocks and reward miners. Rather than a traditional hash-based PoW algorithm like SHA-256, zk-SNARK in Aleo works by requiring miners to construct succinct zero-knowledge proofs that demonstrate correct computation of cryptographic puzzles without revealing underlying transaction details, enabling both privacy and proof of work in a single mechanism.

Aleo is a privacy-focused layer-1 blockchain designed to support scalable decentralized applications with built-in privacy using zero-knowledge proofs. The network uses a hybrid consensus named AleoBFT (combining PoS finality and PoW “proof generation”), where miners compete to generate zk-SNARK proofs that satisfy the network’s proof-of-succinct-work requirements, and successful proof producers are rewarded in ALEO tokens.

In real mining environments, zk-SNARK mining for Aleo is executed using specialized hardware capable of handling the high computational load of proof generation. ASIC miners optimized for the zk-SNARK algorithm — such as IceRiver AE3, AE1 Lite, and Goldshell AE Max II — deliver dedicated hash rates for the protocol and dominate mining performance in the ecosystem.

In addition to ASIC miners, high-end GPUs (for example, NVIDIA CUDA devices) are also used in some cases to accelerate proof computation, reflecting the unique hybrid nature of zk-SNARK proof work.

Because zk-SNARK mining combines proof generation with privacy preservation, miners must focus not only on raw throughput, but also on steady computational efficiency and thermal stability over long runtimes. Hardware optimized for continuous zk-SNARK proof production generally outperforms devices that only excel at short-burst performance, making sustained operational stability a key factor in long-term Aleo mining setups. The BT-MINERS team maintains this zk-SNARK overview to help miners understand what coin the algorithm mines (“ALEO”), how it differs from traditional PoW, and what kind of hardware it favors in practice, enabling informed decisions around Aleo mining.
